Working offline

What works without internet, what is provisional, and where the limits are.

What works without a connection

If the network drops, stamping carries on in the staff app. The actions are collected on the device and sent automatically as soon as there is a connection again.

Cards that were scanned recently still open, from the local cache. In that case the app says when the balance shown is from.

This only applies to the staff app. The counter in the browser needs a connection at all times.

Provisional balances

Stamps booked offline appear immediately, but are marked as provisional. They are final only once the server has confirmed them.

Until then: what the device shows is a good estimate, not the truth. If a customer disagrees, it is better to wait for the connection.

Take care when redeeming offline

Redeeming a reward offline is possible but risky: whether the balance really covers it is always checked by the server. If the reward was redeemed elsewhere in the meantime, the booking is rejected when it is sent.

That is why the app asks first. For larger rewards, it is better to wait until the network is back.

Who did it?

Offline, too, every action is attributed to a staff member: the PIN is checked against an encrypted directory on the device.

Actions that need a manager role (correcting a balance, blocking a card, crediting a reward) are not possible offline. Without a server there is no safe way to prove elevated permissions.

Limits

Only a limited number of actions is cached per card. Once the limit is reached, the app declines further ones instead of quietly collecting them. An honest refusal beats a promise that breaks on sync.
