In short

  • Apple Wallet ships with every iPhone and cannot be uninstalled — there is nothing to download.
  • The card is a signed pass in the PassKit format. It cannot be forged or casually copied.
  • Stamps and points update on their own. Your guests never have to open the card for that.
  • Anyone wearing an Apple Watch has the card on their wrist — handy at the counter.
HOW IT WORKS

How the card gets onto the iPhone.

From the sign on your counter to a finished card takes a few seconds.

  1. Scan the QR or tap the NFC tag

The Camera app reads the QR code directly, no extra scanner needed. Or your guest holds their iPhone against the NFC tag on the counter.

    Camera app is enough
  2. A quick confirmation

A lightweight page shows a preview of your card. Name and birthday are optional — the card works fully anonymously too.

    optional details
  3. “Add to Apple Wallet”

One tap on the black Apple button. iOS shows the pass, a second tap on “Add” files it away.

    one tap
  4. Done — and there to stay

The card now lives in the Wallet app. Next visit, your guest pulls it up like a boarding pass, your team scans, the stamp lands.

NOTICES

The lock screen, honestly explained.

Apple Wallet can surface a card on the lock screen when it is currently relevant. Plenty of vendors make a lot of noise about this channel, so here is the sober version.

  • When the card state changes (new stamp, reward unlocked), the card updates and your guest sees it the next time they glance at their phone.
  • When a reward is due, it says so on the card itself — nobody has to keep count.
  • iOS can show text changes on the card as a brief notice without your guest opening the Wallet app.

For context Worth being clear about: location-based lock screen notices are driven by iOS itself, using the places stored in the pass. That is not a push from Tapja and it cannot be scheduled like an ad slot — your guest decides in iOS settings whether they want it at all.

POSSIBLE & NOT POSSIBLE

What Apple Wallet can do.

And where the platform deliberately draws a line. Both belong in the picture.

Works

Your branding

Logo, colours and reward text are yours. Apple sets the base layout, which is why the card always looks native.

Works

Automatic updates

New stamp, new status: the card in the wallet follows along without anyone doing anything.

Works

Apple Watch

The card reaches the watch with no extra step. At the counter that is often quicker than the phone.

Works

Works without an account

No login, no password, no app. On request the card stays completely anonymous.

Does not work

No free-form marketing pushes

Apple Wallet is not a newsletter channel. Notices follow the card state, not a campaign calendar — use email for promotions.

Does not work

No custom layout

Typeface, arrangement and card shape come from PassKit. Anyone needing total design freedom needs their own app, with everything that entails.

FAQ

Common questions about Apple Wallet.

Do my guests need an app for Apple Wallet?
No. Apple Wallet is installed on every iPhone out of the box and cannot be removed. Your guests tap “Add to Apple Wallet” once — that is the entire process.
Does it work without an NFC tag?
Yes. A QR code is plenty, and the iPhone camera reads it without any extra app. The NFC tag is more convenient at the counter but not required — many businesses start with a printed sign.
What happens when my guest gets a new iPhone?
The card comes across with the iCloud backup. If it is ever missing, another scan of the QR code is enough — the stamp count lives with the account, not the handset.
Can I see who has my card in their wallet?
Your dashboard shows how many cards are active and how often they are stamped. You only see personal details if your guest volunteered them — the card works anonymously too.
What about Android guests?
They get the same card in Google Wallet. You maintain one programme and both platforms are covered — there is no separate administration.
Do my customers need an app?
No. The card lives right in Apple or Google Wallet. Both are already on the phone. No download, no login.
How does the card get onto the phone?
Via an NFC tag at the counter or a QR code: tap or scan once, "Add to Wallet," done. The card is on the phone in seconds.
Is it GDPR-compliant?
Yes, GDPR by design: data minimization, servers in the EU and a separate marketing consent. The card even works anonymously.
